analogplayset: Don’t forget! Thoroughly enjoyed myself at this show tonight, and finally starting to feel good about being in L.A. County.  I also chatted a bit with Joe Ledbetter, one of the artists featured in the show.  He works closely with Motion City Soundtrack and does a lot of painting and graphics, but with a sociology major and no formal art training, he just started by putting around in art (‘dabbling’, if you well) here and there.  Needless to say, this conversation restored my faith in a childhood dream that has repeatedly been stifled by my financial-stability-guilt-ridden conscience throughout the years.  Who says I can’t graduate with a B.A. in neuroscience and still make a living doing art west of the Inland Empire? With a simple keyboard and microphone setup, Andrew played: Holiday From Real, Hammers and Strings, 21 and Invincible (one of my favorites from SoCo and apparently the Mahon crosses his legs like a girl), Platform Lights(? new JM song likely to be released on the upcoming album), Miss California (reputedly rarely gets played on tour), Piano Man (Billy Joel cover), and Swim.  They said they were going to kick everyone out of the store before letting the line of fans swarm in, but I was actually walking around in the store about two minutes before they did so.  No crazy security, really.  I should have just stayed inside and gotten a better spot; someone tall with a huge head ended up blocking my view the entire time (which always seems to happen to me: the cons of being 5’1”).  But, it’s all right because Andrew’s an absolute angel and I got to talk to him again anyway after the fact. Procrastination of my Fulbright application essays, thesis experiment protocol planning, and an endless supply of class readings aside, this evening = time well spent.
